Are there any disadvantages to leaving the traditional phone network behind?
Yes, a few things. Emergency calls may not be able to be traced to your location if required. This may be very important to some people. Also, call quality is not guaranteed to be as good, but generally is. It depends on the quality and speed of your internet connection. Your phone will also be disabled during power blackouts, or any internet connection downtime. Also, some phone-line based internet service providers won’t let you turn off the traditional phone service (including Telstra) – you need to have a “naked” internet service (or a cable connection). But many of these naked service providers bundle internet telephony services with their phone plans for better value anyway.
