Are there any complications of reflux disease if left untreated?
Yes. Some patients can experience a phenomenon known as Barrett’s esophagus. This is where the lining of the esophagus changes and has been associated with increased incidence of esophageal cancer. Other complications include bleeding, stricturing, or narrowing of the esophagus, and occasionally, the progression of symptoms higher up in the esophagus.
