Yes, there are a number of British boarding schools that have impressive buildings. For instance, the Harry Potter films use some of the rooms at Harrow School for their classroom sets. Another example… Charterhouse School is a pretty good example of the splendid setting (17th-century buildings, spires, Gothic windows etc…) http://www.charterhouse.org.uk/ though I don’t know that it has moveable staircases or talking portraits.
