Are there any bed frames that support both a mattress as well as a mattress box?

The box spring is rigid and raises the heigth of the bed. It is about one third of the price of a matress/box set. If you want a low mattress then forget the box and use 1 inch plywood cut to fit on the slats or on the frame to support the mattress. Latex matresses are very good and there are no springs to sag–also good if you have allergies. If you buy a set, the store will tell you to buy a matching set to protect the warranty. Few people use or need a warranty. So a mixed set is fine and much cheaper. But they also want to sell the set so they aren’t stuck with the box. Buy a close out sale mattress for a good price.
