Are there any basic psychologic principles for treating patients with borderline personality disorder?
The treatment of many borderline symptoms relies more heavily on psychotherapy than on medication. Although therapeutic approaches differ, they are unified in that they all address the key problems of the borderline patient. Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving at the University of Iowa provides basic skill groups that help patients set appropriate goals and teach them how to trust and take risks. Anger management and impulse control is also worked on. The STAIRWAYS program (which stands for “setting goals, trusting and taking risks, anger management, impulsivity control, relationship behavior, writing a script, assertiveness training, your choices, and stepping out”) is then used as either a primary therapy or as an adjunct to cognitive-behavioral therapy or psychodynamic therapy.
