Are there any Army spouses here that have lived in South Korea unsponsored?
There’s some good info in the second answer here. Just a couple things though, if you’re not command sponsored, you can’t use MAC flights, you’ll have to pay or commercial. Also, as long as you’re enrolled in DEERS, you can get Tricare. DEERS enrollment is something your husband will have to take care of if he hasn’t already. If you’re enrolled in Tricare now, you’ll have to contact them and change your region of coverage. Had friends bring there wives to Korea, yes you have to get a visa from the Korean consulate, can find it online. Its a different way of life there so get ready for a shock. You’ll live in a studio like house or apartment and they are not cheap. You have no medical care because your not sponsored, I would suggest you go visit 90 days after he gets there, then at mid tour he will come back to the states to visit, you go over again 90 days after his mid tour again, then 90 days after that his tour is complete. You wouldn’t have spent more than 90 days at any one time apart. You won’t have to worry about the language barrier while he is in the field training. And a couple of weeks in Korea at a time is enjoyable, and doable.
