Are there any advantages to the 3 gain stage circuits?
YES. The 3 gain stage topology can deliver more power into difficult loads. These are loads that dip substantially below four ohms over a large portion of the frequency range. The 2 gain stage amplifiers actually will drive these loads but will not deliver additional power into the load. The 3 gain stage circuits offer better bench measurements and have a higher slew. The 3 gain stage amplifiers have a much higher damping factor. Typically 1000 compared to 100 for the 2 gain stage topology. This translates to possibly better control of the woofer depending on the speaker design.
