Are there any advantages to converting to electric cooling fan?
There are advantages and disadvantages. But, you asked about advantages. Electric fan which works with no regards to the rotation of the crankshaft. So, if the vehicle is working stationary or slowly moving under hard conditions, electric fan has capability to cool down the cooling fluid flowing through the radiator with the maximum efficacy. If you want to install it you need to install electric installations along with it. You need thermal sensor attached to the engine block/head that gives information about current temperature. Also you need to install electric/electronic device that follows temperature and drives fan. This should be done by a professional.
The advantages have already been listed and they are right. As for installation, how it is done and what parts are included depends on what kit is purchased. About every parts shop in the US will have a kit for such modifications. If a later modeled SUV had an electric fan one from the salvage yard along with the radiator would be a quick way to do the job, then just wire it to a wire that is hot when the key is in the run position. A thermocouple is not required. These can be wired to run when ever the engine is running. But one that has a sensor to turn it on provide for quicker warm ups and warmer engine temperatures in the winter. Which may not seem like a big deal unless you have owned a car that just will not warm up because the cooling system is too efficient. The fan needs enough CFM’s to provide the cooling needed. Also it need to be small enough to fit in the area available. Mounting the fan to the radiator may require taking it out of the car. Make sure that you use caution
