Traditionally, we Americans think we only have two options, the Republican or the Democratic candidates for president/vice-president and for state and local offices. The Republican Party draws its core strength from big money, corporations, small business people, farmers and people with strong religious convictions. The Democratic Party draws its core strength from labor unions, minorities, intellectuals, gays, liberals and academia. According to the New York Times, contributors to the two parties are drawn along the following lines. The vast majority of CEOs, accountants, and bankers contribute to the Republican Party, while professors, authors, journalists, librarians and lawyers donated heavily to the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party also draws very strong support from Hollywood. Most of the important personalities movie stars, rock musicians and moguls consider themselves leftist and liberal.
