In many cases, the GED is acceptable. Many employers accept it as an alternative to a diploma. So do many colleges. One advantage is that you can study on your own or take online courses. Of course, the examination(s) must be conducted by a certified body. The best way to find out who is certified to conduct GED exams in your state is to ask your Education Board. You could search the internet, but it is too easy to reach a fraudulent website. For purposes of college, many also accept alternatives like the ACT and/or SAT. Like the GED, you can self-study for these exams. Like the GED, the exams must be conducted by a certified body. However, the ACT and SAT tend to be more expensive than the GED and are overkill for getting yourself enrolled in a community college.
