Are there alternative means to vitrification used in France for conditioning ultimate nuclear waste?
Vitrification of ultimate waste is the only industrialised conditioning technique in the world for this type of waste. This extremely effective process is tailored to a very wide range of products and enables waste to be concentrated and stabilised in solid form, preventing its spread. It has been implemented for high-level waste for several decades. Glass formulation and its production process are the subject of research aiming to further improve its properties. At the same time, the CEA is currently studying new materials likely to further improve containment of this type of waste, even for a part of the waste obtained from additional separation procedures performed in addition to spent fuel reprocessing. Within the framework of the law passed on 30 December 1991, the CEA is also looking into the possible incineration and transmutation of certain long-lived radioactive waste items. These processes are in the early stages and have not yet been optimised.
