Are there advantages and disadvantages to fighting from horseback (game mechanics wise)?
Yes, cavalry can move much faster and horses get tired more slowly than PCs. On the other hand, the mount can also throw the rider down and has to be fed, can not travel effectively everywhere and will have greater trouble turning around. Also, if the horse is slain, the rider is dismounted losing precious hit points and stamina.
