Are there academic Scholarships and Bursaries?
Yes. Scholarships are given to those of outstanding ability. The money for them generally comes from an investment fund, often one bequeathed to the school many years ago. So although a scholarship is a very prestigious thing to have, it is not always very valuable, because it is not means tested. Bursaries, on the other hand, which come from central school funds, are means-tested ways of supporting certain pupils. And if you win a scholarship you are automatically eligible to be means tested for a Bursary in addition.
