Are therapy sessions confidential?
For the most part, what is discussed, as well as the fact that you are a client, remains confidential. However, there are exceptions to confidentiality, which include, but are not limited to, when disclosure is permitted or required by law or when the therapist deems it necessary to break confidentiality in order to protect the client or others. This might include the therapist reporting suspected child abuse, elder abuse, or intervening if a client appears suicidal, homicidal or poses a threat of violence to others. Disclosure may also be required pursuant to a legal proceeding.
