Are the trends or fashions in hats steady from year to year or are the design principles timeless?
Although the principles of design remain eternal- the TRENDS: shapes, colors, and materials do change. As an example, we have noticed a steady move from sewn braid and millinery horsehair to a lighter, translucent material called sinnamay. This material can be blocked into very sophisticated designs or can be more bohemian if left in a more natural state. Also, there has been a definite movement toward smaller headpieces called ‘Fascinators’, These are combs, headbands or small cocktail-style pieces comprised of flowers, feathers, jewels and more. The attraction of these smaller headpieces is there is more room at the races, especially in a box. They are also easier to wear for first-time race goers and they are quite versatile- they could be worn to a nightclub or a holiday party, after the meet is over.
