Are the subtitles in other languages just as poor as the English subtitles (for movies)?
This is actually a tough question, it’s making me think! I like you. Well it depends on how well the producer made the movie, and how popular the movie is. Take for example the movie 300. about the 300 Spartans who held off 100,000 Persian Soldiers at Thermopylae. The Spanish subtitles are almost exactly the script in English, with a few minor things. But if you spoke native Spanish you would perceive it in a non-literal way. If you don’t understand this example (again) mucho gusto means “good to meet you” but literally it means “with much pleasure”. See? But take the movie Enemy at the Gates about Vasilli Zaetzev the Russian sniper of WWII. The Russian and Japanese subtitles aren’t all that amazing. They mean some different things than what was meant to be said. It also depends on how close the countries are together. Farther countries apart like the US and Chinese have very different subtitles.
