Are the semi-permeable membranes the only required item in an RO system?

No! A properly designed RO system will incorporate a pre-filter unit to remove large contaminants, a carbon filter to help remove organic contaminants such as chlorine and its by-products, a high pressure plunger pump equipped with special Stainless Steel liquid-end to raise the incoming water pressure to the required RO pressure for the fluid to be purified and an UV (Ultra-Violet) unit to ensure a complete purification process. Other components such as instrumentation etc are also desirable.
