Are the “Nomura” giant jellyfish on the fossil record, or are they recently evolved?
Greywolf will obviously be surprised to learn that the definition of a fossil includes a preserved impression left as an imprint on the face of exposed or unearthed substrate ! Many such jellyfish imprints are recorded and displayed around the world. I cannot find specific references to this species in the fossil record but the Family (Stomolophidae) that they belong to is most certainly recorded as such. Nemopilema nomurai have been launched into the public conscious by the recent capsize event of a japanese fishing boat after hauling a catch of more than 40 of this species averaging around 200 lbs each.
