Are the Lower Lakes of the River Murray historically freshwater lakes?
Freshwater has been common in the Lower Lakes during most of the past 6,000 years but seawater intrusions occurred regularly during times of low flows. After 1900, with the advent of significant irrigation schemes in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, seawater intrusions became common. Since 1940, the barrages have maintained an artificial separation between freshwater and seawater.
