Are the greenways or wetlands in Wilsonville breeding grounds for mosquitoes and West Nile virus?
Any waters that are still and stagnant are potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. However, greenways and wetlands provide important benefits to humans and wildlife. They help to filter pollutants from air, water and soil, and reduce erosion and flooding. Mosquitoes play an important role in these ecosystems as a major food source for wildlife, including fish, birds, bats, frogs and other insects. Moving water such as streams and rivers are generally unsuitable habitats for mosquito breeding. These habitats have animals and fish that help control mosquitoes, in turn helping control the spread of the virus. The City of Wilsonville is working closely with Clackamas County Vector Control and other public health agencies to monitor and control mosquito populations and detect potential health problems in our area.
