Are the frets on a guitar the metal pieces or the spaces between the metal pieces?
When we refer to a FRET, it is the metal fret and not the space in-between the frets. But, when someone asks you to play on the 3rd fret, it means to play on the 3rd spacing directly behind the 3rd fret. There is a difference when a fret buzzes and needs repair. You are not going to file in-between the fret and file the wood. Rather, you will file the fret wire itself.
