Are the Expectations for ESL/ELD significantly different?
To examine whether or not expectations differ with regards to ESL and ELD students, the following table compares the expected abilities of ESL and ELD learners in terms of Writing at the grade 4-6 level, Stages 1 and 2. What is noticed is that there are slight differences in the abilities of ESL and ELD learners. ELD learners appear to require more structure and guided situations than the ESL student. Due to the acquisition of literacy in the first language, and previous exposure to educational situations, and ESL student is able to use these experiences as a scaffold for learning English. Since an ELD student has little exposure to literacy development, greater educational support is required.
