Ed: We recently referred to David Fairchild’s book about his experiences as a plant explorer, which he titled, “The World Was My Garden”. Over the past few years Leon and I have come to see lawn chair gardening with more emphasis on the joy of lawn chairs than on that of actual gardening, meaning that the spirit is willing but our bodies have begun to protest the rigors of actually giving gardens their proper care. This has turned me to thinking about the opportunity that has given the plant world, which is now invading my home gardens. Many of the plants that I introduced under personal sponsorship have disappeared and been replaced by “where did that come from?” The easy answer is that birds and squirrels smuggled them in, but I want to probe a little deeper.
