Are the corporate governance laws in Lebanon themselves good?
Meouchi: The laws are good but they could become better. With the Lebanese Corporate Governance Task Force and LTA [Lebanese Transparency Association] (I sat on the board for 6 years), we worked on a project to improve the Lebanese code of commerce to make it more CG compliant and to make many other laws such as the capital markets and securities laws more CG compliant. This has obviously not been enacted by parliament yet. But the laws are acceptable. There are many things that you can do to be more corporate governance-compliant that the law doesn’t prevent you from doing. Now sometimes, the law is a hindrance because it doesn’t allow you to do certain things, for example the separation of the chairman and general manager. This is an area where I first got involved because I wanted to make a difference. I’m a multi-tasker, so I didn’t want to just be a corporate lawyer.
