Indeed, it is hard to believe that anyone with an abiding faith in the Constitution and in the American people could believe that the actions of Nixon during the Watergate cover-up threatened the stability of the nation. Regardless, historians and others already have begun to classify Watergate, largely according to their individual appraisals of the character of Nixon and the men around him. But, although final judgment must wait, at least until the participants, including those in the news media who intimately were involved in the coverage of the event, are dead and the figurative dust has settled, it is not too early to begin comparing Watergate with the scandals and the corruption rampant in the administration of President Clinton. The Watergate scandal of Nixon stands apart from the multiscandals of Clinton for several reasons.
