Are the Christian Scriptures Corrupt?

July 26th, 2010 Muslims sometimes assert that the Christian Scriptures are “corrupt.” But some passages in the Qur’an speak more favorably calling the text of Christian Scripture “guidance,” “light,” “a confirmation,” and “truth.” It is my understanding that early Islamic scholars taught the text of Jewish and Christian Scriptures were not changed (Ibn al-Layth, Ibn Rabban, Ibn Qutayba, Al-Ya’qubi, Al-Tabari, Al-Baqillani and Al-Ma’sudi). Belief that the text of Christian Scriptures is corrupt may be a corruption of early Islam first espoused by Ibn Hazm (Khazem) some four hundred years after Muhammad.
