Are the characters from James Camerons Titanic film real?

Dawson on the Titanic, but his first name was Joseph, and he was in the crew, not third class. His body was recovered and buried in a tombstone enscribed with his first initial and surname, prompting fangirls across the country to shower the grave with flowers. However, the characters of Molly Brown, Colonel Astor, J. Bruce Ismay, the officers, and Captain Edward Smith were all true.
