Despite the obvious health benefits of dance, it is often neglected when considering Government health initiatives. Dance is often not recognised as a sports activity and therefore when tackling obesity in children, or adults, it is not a recommended solution. There are thousands of children involved in dance, either at primary school level or at dance schools, and Equity believes it should be incorporated into Government thinking about health, and supported accordingly. How effective is the Arts Council England at developing policies, deploying investment and implementing policy initiatives? While there may have been criticism in the past, Arts Council England is increasingly becoming sympathetic to dance. The new Director of Dance is very committed and Equity has already been in dialogue about what we can do to support ACE in its efforts to raise the profile of dance.
