Are the annexation of Texas and Mexican War causes of the Civil War?
Causes of wars are always a debated issue. My belief is that the southeren states leadership felt economically suppressed by the northeren interest. The agrarian south produced the raw materials, cotton and indigo and tobacco that supplied the industrial north with the ability to produce textiles that supplied a world demand. The south determined that their wealth would always be controled by the north unless the north was forced to compete with foreign markets for the products produced in the south. The south wanted to develop trade agreements with foreign markets. The north saw that this would allow the south to develop wealth that they would not by necessity share with the north. To muster the Army of The North the United States Government involved the slave issue as a way to interest the everyday common man of the north in an issue that he could become emotionally involved in.
