Yes tasks and projects are a necessary part of all children’s’ education. Problem Based Learning is a technique that promotes team problem solving, something that we all need to develop skills in to operate in the real world. That being said, it is necessary to meet every child’s needs in the classroom. Some of course won’t adapt as well with this type of instructional method, but every student needs to learn to achieve using all methods. The theory of multiple intelligences, various learning styles, and differentiated learning does not let the student “off the hook” in the styles/areas they don’t operate as well in. Some kids take written tests with ease. Some don’t. But that doesn’t mean we never give written tests to those who don’t like them. Teachers just need to be more aware and provide more choices to address this.
