Are Sylvain and Dave typical recipients?
Well, yes and no. The average age for heart transplants is probably around 50, so it’s not that much older than Sylvain. When you think about the early transplants that were done — people didn’t live very long and there were a lot of complications — we really have come a long way. We can get people now back to a “normal” life. Both Sylvain and Dave work full-time, they both have families, kids. And here they are doing this! I wouldn’t expect every transplant recipient to climb mountains, but what we can take from this is that the possibility is there. What did you learn scientifically? There are three major things we’re studying and we don’t have all the results yet. We are looking at oxygen in the blood, trying to determine if it’s different in transplant recipients. And there didn’t seem to be much difference among any of the climbers.
