Are students with disabilities expected to meet the same standards and take the same tests as general education students?
School districts must ensure that each student with a disability has equal access to the full range of programs, services and assessments available to all students in order to achieve desired learning results, as appropriate to the unique needs of the student. Most students with disabilities have the ability to pass state tests and achieve the requirements for a high school diploma, if they are afforded access to the general education curriculum and provided the necessary supports. Some students with disabilities will not be able to achieve a high school diploma. These students will earn an Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma, based on achieving the goals specified in their IEP. Parents, teachers and other members of the Committee have an important role in ensuring students with disabilities receive the special education supports and services, as well as test accommodations and program modifications they need to help them attain New York State’s learning standards.
