Are studded snow tires allowed in Portland?
Yes, state law permits studded tires on Oregon highways and city streets. Studded tires are allowed only from November 1 through March 31. Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles in Oregon outside the permitted studded tire season can be charged with a Class C traffic violation, which currently carries a minimum $190 fine. ODOT encourages drivers to consider other types of traction tires or chains because studded tires cause at least $42 million damage each year on city streets, county roads, and state highways. ODOT’s budget allows crews to repair only about $11 million of this damage each year. Other types of traction tires are available. Traction tires that meet Rubber Manufacturers Association standards for use in severe snow conditions carry a special symbol on the tire sidewall showing a three-peaked mountain and snowflake. Research shows these tires provide better traction than studded tires when used on bare pavement and most winter driving conditions.
