Are state park facilities accessible for persons using wheelchairs?
The state park resort lodges, along with newer state park facilities and older facilities that have been renovated, offer a variety of accessible features. In several state parks, various outdoor recreation facilities, such as fishing piers, launch ramps, trails, picnic sites and campsites are accessible. Many of Florida’s State Parks offer accessible facilities and programs. For additional access to trails and beaches, all terrain wheelchairs are located in parks throughout the state. Wheelchair lifts are provided at the Boca Grand Lighthouse (Gasparilla island State Park) and Eden Gardens State Park. Accessible boat tours are available at Wakulla Springs State Park, John Pennekamp coral Reef State Park and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Sign language interpreters can be provided, with advanced notice. Many parks with video programs offer an open-captioned version as well as transcribed copies of audio programs. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and Tennessee State Parks have worked diligently to provide reasonable accommodations to its patrons with disabilities to provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in the outdoor programs and activities. Tennessee State Parks has been very sensitive in ensuring that all new construction and existing facilities provide reasonable accommodations for inclusiveness in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This effort is directed towards, employment, providing accessible inn rooms, dining areas, camp grounds, bath houses, visitors’ centers, overlooks, fishing piers, boat docks, golf courses, cabins, shelters, swimming pools, trails, exhibit areas and some natural areas.
