Are standardized tests fair to all economic, ethnic and cultural segments of a diverse student population?
At ETS, we go to great lengths to create tests that are fair to everyone. Every question on every test that we produce goes through a careful review process to ensure that it does not favor or penalize any particular group of students. Test questions developed by ETS undergo thorough, professional reviews to eliminate symbols, words, phrases and art that may have a bias. We also use methods of statistical analysis to identify specific questions on which minority students perform differently to a significant degree. Those questions are then reviewed by outside experts and adjusted or removed if judged unfair. More information on our fairness guidelines and procedures is available in our ETS Standards for Quality and Fairness publication.
