Are sports scholarships available for girls?
Absolutely. Girls have benefitted by Title IX, the legislation that mandates equality in educational institutions, including sports. While the law has been in effect for 35 years, educational institutions are still struggling with the equality issue, mainly from a financial standpoint. Donna Lopiano, recently retired director of the Women’s Sports Foundation, says: $1.2 billion is awarded each year in college sports scholarships, but women only receive 43%.
