Are some breeds of horses friendlier to humans than others?
I’ve had horses for years — many different kinds. With horses it is different than with dogs. Horses show their main differences in skittishness, or wary-ness. Some are definitely more high-strung than others. For fun for a beginner STAY AWAY from Thoroughbreds and Arabians in particular. Oh yeah, and mustangs. These are not horses for beginners or for simple pleasure riding. They can be trained for that and some can excel, but it’s chancy with these three types. They are gorgeous and high spirited and NOT for beginners. Steady and strong and much calmer are the Quarter horse, the Morgan, and the Warmblood. Pony mixes can go either way, depending on the type of pony in the cross. Remember that horses have brains approximately the size of walnuts! You have to know what they are thinking, and if they are thinking at all! Sometimes they simply react, and you must be completely ready for that.
