Are Sociology, Media Studies, English Language and Religious Studies a good combination?

To be honest, I think as a list it could be improved. It really needs to be more diverse – whatever kind of writing you want to do, the more diverse your skills and knowledge, the more attractive you are to potential employers. Because good writing is about diversity, essentially. Firstly, Sociology and Media Studies are both seen as ‘weak’ subjects. I don’t mean don’t do either of them, but to be honest, they’re what I’d see as ‘fourth subjects’ – valid A levels, yes, but not something you’d lead on in your description of your achievements (I don’t believe that either subject is useless or over-easy; just that the more classically academic subjects are more respected by both universities and employers). Don’t be swayed into taking Media Studies just because you’re considering journalism (if you are) – it’s far from necessary for a journalistic writing career, and I think many potential employers and universities would prefer other subjects.
