Are Scissor Sisters good or absolutely fucking terrible?
An excellent question. When I heard a snippet of their “Comfortably Numb” cover, I thought the band was almost, but not quite, as good as the Cheeky Girls. The Cheeky Girls, in case you’re not familiar with the Romanian identical twins’ ouevre, suck. Then, I went online to read reviews of the group. To my amazement, the reviews were universally positive. In fact, I could not find one negative review of Scissor Sisters. So I downloaded the song (sssshhhhhhh!) in order to find out whether the tune in its entirety was better than the snippet had suggested. And indeed, while listening to the full version of “Comfortably Numb,” I heard things that suggested that Scissor Sisters’ cover was, indeed, cleverer than anything by the Fast Food Rockers. What things? Well, like the way it opens with an echo of the guitar line from Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell,” (which, like “Comfortably Numb,” is also featured on The Wall album). And certainly the “Staying Alive” “ha-ha-ha” vocals are an inspired tou
