Are school vending machines offering healthier snacks rather than crisps, chocolates and fizzy drinks?
All chocolate, crisps and fizzy drinks have been removed from vending machines in schools and replaced with apples and bottles of water. The Government funding of £1,200 per primary school and £2,000 per secondary school is far too small. Is there any additional European funding available or funding via the parishes and district councils? Alex replied that she is not aware of any European funding but she will look into whether funding is available via the parishes and districts. She also made the point that by 2011 the existing funding will cease as it is only available for 3 years. Sustainability is a real issue. Children tend to prefer packed lunches whilst parents tend to want their child to have a hot meal. Can anything be done to address this issue? Alex said that she is finding that children who take packed lunches tend to see what else is available at school and then start to ask their parents for hot meals.
