Are School Travel Plans the same as Safer Routes to Schools?
These two projects are similar and work very closely together but are different. Safer Routes to Schools (SRTS) are an outcome or an added benefit of a School Travel Plan (STP). Routes to school that have problems are highlighted during the planning of the STP this information is taken on board by the Traffic Management team of Transportation Services who then budget for work to be carried out within a few years of the STP launch. STPs cover more than just routes to school they consider features on the school site itself and promote the development of sustainable transport by, for example, assessing the need for something like a cycle shed or creating access through an entry point away from the school car park.
