Are scales important to learn if its just rhythm guitar, bass, and drums?
Scales define a series of notes into recognizable patterns. So they are important. Chords are based on scales. In fact, a major chord is simply the first note, the third note, and the fifth note of the major scale. So yes, learn your scales. You will instantly be musically ahead of the majority of rock players. Not jazz, classical, or any real good music genres, but rock and rap and pop you will be leagues ahead of.
