Are Santas reindeer male or female?
The reindeer named in Clement C. Moore’s poem mostly have fairly unisex names like Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Comet, Donner and Blixen although I imagine Vixen is surely female and Cupid is surely male. Rudolph, first referred to in the 1949 Johnny Marks classic song about “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” clearly has a male name. If these were normal reindeer, the males would lose their antlers shortly before Christmas which is at odds with our view of antlered reindeer pulling the sleigh. Females don’t lose their antlers until the New Year. These arguments maybe don’t hold true for Santa’s magic flying reindeer. So on current evidence the genders remain indeterminate.
