No, the Rottweiler that we are familiar with today has been in existence for several centuries. It was bred as a cattle dog and named after the town of Rottweil, the oldest town in south west Germany. Centuries ago, it was used by Teutonic knights when they went hunting wild boar. But by the first half of last century, there were real fears that the breed was beginning to die out. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, a new Rottweiler Club was formed in Germany and the breed was successfully revived.
