I had an interesting conversation recently with an executive at a company that provides solar energy services to commercial, government, and utilities clients. He said that although many business owners and consumers alike might prefer to have their homes and offices powered by cleaner energy (as long as it did not cost them more), the biggest barrier to growing his company’s services were various state regulations that made it difficult to sell alternative energy services to prospective customers. His take on this is that lobbying by environmental groups and green energy advocates is not working as quickly or as effectively as lobbying by groups that support conservation and/or sustainability because the the fossil fuel industries have deeply entrenched relationships with state politicians and local government bureaucrats and it is easier to get their compliance on conservation mandates than it is to try to overhaul “the system” and jeopardize these relationships.
