With the success of the internet the penny has dropped for the majority of regional and local papers, with news content being made available to a new generation of consumers online. But with the advent of online news the circulation figures of papers has continued to fall. “Within five years every newspaper will be free and they’ll all be online. And if they’re not, they should be.” Piers Morgan The Daily Mail and General Trust chairman Lord Rothermere said earlier this year that Northcliffe Newspapers had seen a drop in circulation of 4.9 per cent in the January to June period. On the other side of the coin, he mentioned over the last 12 months Northcliffe’s digital activities had grown substantially, with the number of unique users rising by 32 per cent to just over 2 million a month.
