Are recumbents easily seen by automobile drivers on the road?
A. Because recumbents are still pretty rare, they are eye-catching. Which are you more likely to notice when you are driving, a mini van or a Ferrari? But a Ferrari is so low to the ground! (On most recumbents my head is higher than the roof of a Corvette, and I wear a bright colored helmet!) Depending on the traffic you ride in, you may want to make your bike more visible (even on a wedgie). Try wearing a bright colored helmet or adding a flag. I often ride with a bright yellow “tailbox” behind the seat of my bike. It has storage space, is more aerodynamic than the seat alone and is quite bright. Lowracer recumbent bikes and many recumbent trikes are much lower and harder to see in traffic.
