Are rats good pets for children/first pets?
Yes! I recommend rats over all other animals as a child’s first “furry” pet (and not just because I’m addicted to the critters). My parents let me explore a large magnitude of the animal and pet world when I was a child, and the rats were without a doubt, the best. Mice are fragile, nervous little creatures and have a tendency to smell bad. Though they require less space than a rat, mice need a gentle touch and may get lost easily. The same applies to other smaller rodents. One of the most obnoxious things for a parent is having to carefully move all the furniture because their child’s darling pet got away from him/her in a blink of an eye. Rats, however, are bigger, slower (especially males), and can learn their names and form such a deep bond that they won’t run from you, even when dropped. Another point is odor.
