Muscle mass is built thru progressive overload of the muscles. This is done by consistently increasing the amount of weight lifted within a certain period of time. For instance, when you do pushups, you’re lifting somewhere between 65 and 75 percent of your total bodyweight (that means a 200 pound guy is pushing roughly 150 pounds). Starting out, you can build some mass doing pushups; but there will come a point in time where you will have to increase the weight (which you can do to some degree by using a weighted vest). Eventually, you’ll need to switch to bench presses to get the amount of muscle overload needed to continue growing. Remember, if you continue to increase the total amount of weight lifted per minute of time, you will continue to grow. Pounds lifted per minute is the best way to measure work output when lifting weights.
