Are Psychological services covered by OHIP?
No. Services provided by a psychologist in private practice are not covered by OHIP. However, fees are reimbursed by private extended health care insurance provided as a benefit by your employer. The fee for service is akin to a dentist’s services. We work on a fee for service basis, and people typically pay as they go, at the end of each session, receiving a receipt suitable for submission to their insurance company. A personal cheque or cash is usually the accepted norm. Some psychologists accept payment by credit card or debit card. The part of the fee not reimbursed by your insurance company is claimable as a medical expense on income tax. You will find that, when you pay for your therapy after each session, debt is not built up and your therapy becomes a budgeted expense valued for its positive impact in your life.
